Introduction: The population demand of older adults in nursing homes and the challenges they face in providing quality oral health care to elderly residents due to limited availability and access to adequate dental equipment, instruments, materials and supplies. Lack of awareness of the importance of oral health in the care of the elderly and the low priority given to oral health in nursing home resources may also contribute to this situation.
Methodology: consisted of a literature review of various articles in English and Spanish, the search was performed using. Pubmed, SciElo, Redalyc, Elsevier, Wiley and Google Scholar.
Results: Older adults residing in nursing homes face a high prevalence of oral health problems, including periodontal disease and other pathologies. The study found that health care personnel lack the knowledge and skills necessary to provide adequate oral health care to residents.
Conclussion: Oral health problems are common among elderly nursing home residents, and health care personnel often lack the knowledge and skills necessary to provide adequate oral health care to the elderly. The study suggests educational interventions for health care personnel.
