Use of botulinum toxin for the treatment of bruxism

The importance given to the use of botulinum toxin for the treatment of bruxism in several studies is welcome since they describe the effectiveness of its application to patients with this pathology and the decrease of this parafunctional activity. The aim of the review is to explain the use of botulinum toxin in the treatment of bruxism through literature reviews for the knowledge of the effectiveness, safety and adverse effects of its application in the therapy of bruxism disorder. According to its approach or modality, the research is considered qualitative because it is based on the study of characteristics, traits and qualities rather than numerical values. Bruxism is a spasm of the muscles of mastication, accompanied by involuntary clenching of the jaws and their intense movement relative to each other, so the use of botulinum toxin a potent neurotoxin available in two formats for clinical applications: botulinum toxin type A and type B have proven effective in decreasing the strength of the contractions of the jaw muscles.
