Objective: to carry out a study to observe the effects of both cigarettes and vaping by means of an in vitro experiment in order to obtain conclusions that will add to the knowledge on the subject. Introduction: The electronic cigarette has become popular within the adolescent population; thus, it has also been seen as a good alternative to abandon conventional cigarettes. However, the substances it contains are harmful, a fact that is ignored by the population. Therefore, it is important to provide extra knowledge on the subject by testing an in vitro experiment. Methods: an experimental and descriptive in vitro longitudinal study was carried out. Results: cotton swabs were used and were exposed to both vape and cigarette smoke; there was no major change in the experimental group with vape vs. the other group with traditional cigarette. Conclusion: cotton swabs exposed for 7 days to conventional cigarette smoke had more noticeable changes in coloration than those exposed to vaper smoke. Due to the short period of time no effects could be obtained with respect to the electronic cigarette.
