Abstract

This study focused on reviewing the literature on the use of probiotics, specifically lactobacillus and bifidobacterium, in oral health care with the aim of maintaining a healthy oral microbiome and preventing oral diseases. The literature review was conducted using key terms related to these probiotics and oral problems in recognized databases such as PubMed, Scielo and Google Scholar. The results revealed that Lactobacillus strains have mechanisms that can inhibit caries-causing bacteria and oral pathogens, including hydrogen peroxide production, competition for cell adhesion and modulation of the immune system. In conclusion, it is suggested that lactobacillus with probiotic attributes can be used in combination to prevent and treat oral diseases, such as dental caries and periodontal disease.
