Abstract

Gingivitis, an inflammation of the gums without affecting the dental supporting tissues, marks the beginning of periodontal disease and is characterized by symptoms such as redness, swelling and bleeding of the gums. In diabetic patients, the risk of developing periodontal disease is three times higher than in those without diabetes, establishing a bidirectional relationship between gingivitis and type II diabetes. Despite this, there are no accurate statistics on the prevalence of gingivitis in Ecuador. This study investigated a sample of 60 patients with type II diabetes and found a high prevalence of 98% of gingivitis. A direct relationship was observed between gingivitis and age (less than 65 years) and female gender, although no direct association with glycosylated hemoglobin levels was identified.
