Abstract

Introduction: the Papanicolaou smear is a test used to observe the cells of the squamocolumnar junction of the cervical epithelium, with the aim of detecting precancerous cells and preventing progression to cervical cancer. Since its implementation as a population screening method, a decrease in cervical cancer incidence and mortality has been observed.

Objective: to describe the frequency of cervical lesion findings in PAP smears of women under 30 years of age analyzed in an anatomic pathology laboratory in the city of Rosario in the year 2022.

Method: a quantitative, observational, retrospective, cross-sectional, descriptive, retrospective study was carried out on women under 30 years of age attended between January 1 and December 31, 2022 at the anatomic pathology service of the Private Laboratory of Clinical-Surgical Pathology of Rosario. The population consisted of all women aged 18 to 30 years with samples sent during the study period. Data were collected through a secondary source comprising the database with PAP results, both electronic and on paper, the data collected were conformed by age, presence of lesions, adequacy of the sample and type of cellular lesion present.

Results: during the period analyzed 149 studies were reviewed with an overall median age of 26 years, of which 25 samples (16,8 %) presented some type of lesion, being 10 (40 %) HSIL with a median age 24,5 and 15 (60 %) LSIL with a median age 27.

Conclusions: we can conclude with the work performed that, every sixteen women under 30 years of age analyzed, one presents some type of cervical lesion, corresponding predominantly to lesions without risk of malignancy
