Introduction: dermatologic manifestations can provide relevant information about possible systemic conditions. The aim of this report is the identification of skin lesions, which is often the first manifestation, to allow the physician to reach a timely diagnosis of a non-dermatologic pathology and to provide treatment from a more comprehensive approach.
Methods: the study design was that of a bibliographic review, based on articles that met the inclusion criteria. The computerized bibliographic search was through academic Google in the period 2013-2024 and the Atlas of Clinical Dermatology, Fitzpatrick 7th edition.
Development: the literature suggests that in dermatologic patients psychic disorders are common, mainly anxiety and depression, with a bidirectional relationship between skin and mental health. A coexistence between vitiligo and psoriasis was observed, possibly due to genetic variants. Several studies suggest that patients with endocrine pathologies presented skin alterations, diabetes mellitus being the most frequent. Endocrine disorders showed various cutaneous manifestations, including acanthosis nigricans, xanthelasmas and acne. Dermatological manifestations were also identified in relation to diabetes, liver disease, renal disease and syphilis.
Conclusion: it is necessary to take into account skin lesions as markers of systemic diseases, taking the patient in an integral way, performing anamnesis, complete physical examination, laboratory tests to confirm them and the correct and timely treatment
