The importance of sleep quality

The text addressed the relevance of sleep quality to human health, highlighting how its deterioration negatively affected physical, emotional and cognitive well-being, especially in adolescents and university students. It noted that lack of sleep was related to chronic illnesses, poor academic performance and depressive symptoms. In the face of the adverse effects of pharmacological treatments, non-pharmacological alternatives such as cognitive-behavioural therapy for insomnia (CBT-I) and mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR) were highlighted, both of which demonstrated sustained effectiveness. Complementary methods such as physical exercise and exposure to bright light were also explored. Finally, the potential of digital therapy to expand access to treatment was emphasised, although more research was still needed to adapt these interventions to different contexts.
