Abstract

There are several sleep disorders, the most common being obstructive sleep apnea, central apnea and that which includes the two mentioned types. Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is the most common sleep-disordered breathing syndrome, with a high prevalence in the general population. OSA contributes significantly to psychiatric, metabolic, and cardiovascular diseases (CVD), such as depression, diabetes, hypertension, and stroke, and also impairs daytime function by enhancing sleep deficiency. However, about 80% of the population with these disorders has not been diagnosed, which is why knowing the generalities of sleep apnea contributes to early diagnosis to reduce the impact of complications in the population that suffers from it.
Solid studies were obtained and the literature was reviewed from the PubMed database from the last five years. Data extraction and synthesis were carried out by three researchers where they evaluated the quality of the included studies and the data were qualitatively synthesized.
