Abstract

Background: Adaptive behavior assessment (AC) is a crucial structured method for understanding and assessing the severity of autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Deficits in adaptive behavior are an integral part of this disorder.

CA refers to the practical skills that allow individuals to function effectively in their environment, including communication, personal autonomy, social skills, and self-care skills. In this sense, the evaluation of adaptive behavior becomes a fundamental tool in the comprehensive evaluation and rehabilitation of individuals with ASD.

Objective: Support the use of adaptive behavior assessment in determining the severity of ASD and its impact on the person's daily life.

Methodology: Case study, 10 years, and 3 months old child, derived from psychological consultation, conducting a diagnostic process, background evaluation, clinical observation of behavior and free play, specific responses to difficulties and stress, standardized tests and standardized for international use.

Results: The level of severity established based on a structured evaluation of adaptive behavior provides more complete and accurate results than clinical observation alone when evaluating specific areas related to communication, self-care skills, socialization and behavior, in the different areas of development of daily life, finding a greater correspondence with the level of functionality of the evaluated individual, providing a valuable tool based on evidence for the clinical judgment of the health professional.
