Abstract

A comprehensive study was conducted on the presence of antibiotic-resistant bacteria (ARB) and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in drinking water, considering their impact on global public health. A systematic literature search (Following the PRISMA guidelines) from 2019 to 2024 was employed using the PICO strategy in meta-search engines such as PubMed and Web of Science. Ten studies meeting the inclusion criteria were identified, addressing antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in drinking water samples in various countries. The results highlighted the presence of ARB and ARGs in drinking water systems, influenced by factors such as disinfection, fecal contamination, and wastewater discharge. High diversity of resistant bacteria and a direct connection between wastewater treatment plants and the presence of antibiotic residues in water were observed. It was concluded that proper management of drinking water quality is crucial to prevent the spread of antimicrobial resistance, emphasizing the importance of understanding the impact of disinfection processes and addressing fecal contamination in antibiotic resistance prevention.
