Dental caries is a chronic transmissible bacterial infection that causes the destruction of dental tissues. Over the years, different research has been carried out on the methodology used for the elimination of caries, even though it can be prevented, it is considered a public health problem. This paper will analyze the information gathered on the efficacy of caries removal using papain compared to other atraumatic removal techniques (ART). In addition, advantages and disadvantages of each method, treatment time, pain experience, acceptability of this treatment in patients, and caries removal effectiveness will be shown. Finally, the results found in this literature review indicate that although the treatment time is twice as long using papain gel ART compared to other ART techniques, the benefits are more rewarding. On the other hand, some studies showed that most of the patients presented significantly less pain and the risk of pulp exposure has been reduced without damaging healthy tissue, which makes papain gel an excellent and effective ally for caries removal.
