Abstract

Background: Periodontitis is the sixth most common dental disease in the world population, it has a prevalence of 11.2%, The use of manual and ultrasonic instruments offers great benefits in terms of results in non-surgical periodontal therapy, depending on the technique and implementation of instrumentation, for such reason they play a fundamental role during periodontal treatment, to reduce risk factors and guarantee a correct result. Objective: The aim of the present review of the literature is to evaluate the effectiveness of both techniques for the removal of bacterial plaque and dental calculus during non-surgical periodontal therapy. Materials and methods: The literature search was carried out in different databases such as Elsevier, PubMed, Scielo and Scopus, using exclusion and inclusion criteria, leaving a total of 16 articles selected for this investigation. Results: It was obtained as a result that both Gracey curettes and ultrasound should be implemented together and with periodic maintenance, in this way its degree of effectiveness is 95%, and it presents great benefits for the patient as the reduction of the depth of the pocket and the elimination of postoperative pain and possible complications. Conclusion: The implementation of the manual and ultrasonic technique is recommended during non-surgical periodontal therapy, due to its high level of efficiency in eliminating biofilm, plaque, and calculus deposits sub and supragingival, thus guaranteeing a good periodontal treatment
